In Chapel Hill the car is often parked somewhere you cannot easily leave it for a day: a numbered apartment space, a deck by campus, a spot on a Carrboro street. Mobile windshield replacement brings the job to that spot. Here is how it works, and what to sort out first.

Raleigh Auto Glass is a website of Impex Auto Glass. Impex has no storefront in Chapel Hill or Carrboro; its technicians come to the vehicle. This page covers windshield replacement in Chapel Hill, NC, when a repair will do instead, the camera calibration newer cars need, and how the bill is usually handled.

Chapel Hill, Carrboro and the roads in between
Chapel Hill sits in the southeast corner of Orange County, with a small part reaching east into Durham County. Durham borders it to the northeast and Carrboro directly to the west, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the flagship of the UNC System, is at its center. I-40 runs along the town’s northern outskirts on its way from Hillsborough to Durham, and US 15-501 runs as an expressway between Chapel Hill and Durham. Between them, plenty of daily driving happens at highway speed behind trucks, which is where most chips start.
Impex covers Chapel Hill and Carrboro together. Give your street or the name of the apartment complex or deck when you ask for a quote, and Impex works out the visit from there.
Repair first, if the damage allows
Not every mark on the windshield means a new one. Windshield repair in Chapel Hill is the smaller job, and the cheaper one, when the damage qualifies. Impex’s rule is that a repair may be possible when a chip or crack is small, shallow and away from the edges. ROLAGS, the industry repair standard, treats stone breaks up to two inches across and single line cracks up to 14 inches as repairable. A chip smaller than a quarter usually can be filled; that is a rule of thumb, not a standard.
Replacement is the answer when a crack reaches the edge, when the damage is directly in front of the driver, when there are several breaks, or when the damage sits where the forward camera looks through the glass. The repair itself is described step by step on windshield repair Durham; the method is the same in Chapel Hill.
What the technician needs where you park
A windshield replacement is done around the outside and the inside of the car, with both front doors open. Before the visit, check these with Impex:
- Room around the car: both front doors open fully and space to stand at the front corners. A tight end space next to a wall can be a problem.
- Permission to work there, if the lot belongs to a complex, an employer or the university. Some lots have rules about repairs on site.
- Headroom in a parking deck, for the technician and the new windshield.
- Dry conditions for the urethane. Rain on the bonding surface is a reason to reschedule or move under cover.
- Somewhere the car can sit undisturbed after the install until the technician says it is safe to drive.
- A clear stretch of road nearby if the camera needs a dynamic calibration drive.
If none of the usual spots work, tell Impex. A driveway, an office lot or a different space can often be agreed instead.

Three short steps: the glass, the vehicle and how to reach you. Mention the parking situation in the notes so the visit can be planned around it.
The replacement, in brief
The glass is ordered by VIN, so the camera bracket, rain sensor and any heated wiper area match your car. At the car, the technician removes the wipers, cowl and trim, cuts out the old windshield through its urethane bead, prepares the frame, lays fresh urethane and sets the new glass. Mirror, sensors and trim go back on, and the camera is calibrated if the car has one.
Impex says the install takes about one hour plus a short curing period, and most cars are back on the road within two hours. AGSC, the Auto Glass Safety Council, says the safe drive-away time depends on the type and brand of adhesive and the weather at the time, which is why your technician, not a fixed rule, tells you when to drive. For the first 24 hours, Impex advises not washing the car and not slamming the doors.
The full sequence, with the glass options and what each windshield feature means for the order, is on our page on windshield replacement Durham NC.

Camera calibration and the test drive
Newer cars carry a camera behind the mirror for lane departure warning, collision braking and adaptive cruise control. I-CAR lists removing the windshield as an event that may require the camera to be aimed again, and maker requirements vary by year, make and model. Calibration comes in two forms. A static calibration sets targets in front of the parked car while a scan tool aims the camera. A dynamic calibration needs the car driven at or below a set speed for a set time or distance, and I-CAR notes it may need roads free of rain or snow, heavy traffic and curves. Some cameras need both.
Impex says it calibrates on site immediately after windshield replacement, completes static and dynamic calibrations in one visit, and that calibration takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours. In Chapel Hill a dynamic drive usually means picking a quieter, straighter road at a quiet time, not the middle of a game-day afternoon.
If a warning light stays on
If a lane or braking warning appears after the work, or the system behaves oddly, stop using the feature and call Impex. Do not rely on a driver aid that has not been calibrated.
Paying for it: comprehensive coverage and your choice of shop
Glass breakage is a comprehensive loss in North Carolina, paid less any deductible, according to the NC Department of Insurance. The state has no zero-deductible glass law; some policies include full glass coverage, so check yours. Students driving a car insured on a parent’s policy, possibly from another state, should check that policy’s own glass terms, which may differ.
Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose who repairs the vehicle, and the insurer pays the same amount whichever repair service you select. If the insurer recommends a shop, it must tell you that you are under no obligation to use it. A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so it adds no Safe Driver Incentive Plan points; insurers may still consider how often you claim. Impex works with all major insurance providers.
Old repairs, pitting and a windshield that has had enough
Cars that have done years of I-40 and US 15-501 miles often carry more than one mark: two or three old filled chips, a sandblasted haze across the lower glass, and finally a new crack. Each old repair is sound on its own, but several close together in front of the driver, or pitting that flares in low sun and oncoming headlights, are good reasons to replace rather than repair the latest chip. When you send the quote form, mention old repairs and any haze, and a photo of the whole windshield as well as the new damage helps.
Replacing a windshield that has had several repairs is also a chance to check what the new glass should carry. The VIN settles the fitment, including the camera bracket and sensors, and Impex’s technicians can recommend between the glass options for your car.

Questions people ask
Can my windshield be replaced in an apartment parking lot in Chapel Hill?
Usually, if there is room to open both front doors and the lot allows it. Tell Impex where the car is when you ask for a quote.
Do you cover Carrboro?
Yes. Impex’s mobile service covers Chapel Hill and Carrboro together.
Is windshield repair possible instead of replacement?
Often, when the chip or crack is small, shallow and away from the edges. ROLAGS treats breaks up to two inches and single cracks up to 14 inches as repairable.
What if it rains on the day?
Urethane needs a dry bonding surface, so a wet day can mean moving the car under cover or picking another time. Impex will tell you which.
My car is insured in another state. Does that matter?
Your own policy’s glass terms apply. Check the deductible and whether glass is covered in full.
How long does calibration take after a new windshield?
Impex says between 30 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the vehicle and whether it needs static, dynamic or both.
