A smashed door window, a rear glass that shattered in the cold, a small quarter pane cracked by a stone: the glass around a car breaks in different ways and gets fixed in different ways. This page covers auto glass in Durham, NC beyond the windshield.

Raleigh Auto Glass is a website of Impex Auto Glass. In Durham the service is mobile: Impex has no storefront in the city, and the technician replaces the glass where the car is, at home, at work or in the lot where it was broken into. For the windshield itself, see windshield replacement Durham NC and windshield repair Durham.

The first hour after a car window is broken
Side and back windows are not built like the windshield. On most cars they are tempered glass, which breaks into small pieces rather than holding together, so a broken door window usually means an open hole and glass everywhere. What you do before the technician arrives makes the visit quicker and keeps the cabin dry.
- If the car was broken into, check that it is safe to approach, and call the police if you want a report for your insurer.
- Take photos of the damage and of anything taken. Your insurer may ask for them.
- Take valuables and documents out of the car.
- Cover the opening with heavy plastic taped to the paint, not to the glass edge or the trim, to keep rain out.
- Leave the broken glass inside the door and on the seats for the technician to clear, but sweep up what is on the ground around the car.
- Call Impex or send the quote form with the year, make and model, the VIN and which window is broken.
Request a car window quote in Durham
Three short steps: which glass, the vehicle and how to reach you. Say which side and which door, or front or rear quarter, so the right part is ordered.
Door and side windows
A door window sits inside the door, raised and lowered by a regulator. Replacing it means taking the door panel off, clearing every piece of broken glass out of the door and its channels, fitting the new glass to the regulator, and checking that it runs up and down cleanly and seals at the top. Broken glass left inside the door rattles and can scratch the new window, so the clean-out is a real part of the job.
Impex says a side window replacement takes 30 to 60 minutes and that you can drive immediately afterwards. There is no adhesive to cure on a door window that winds up and down, which is why there is no wait.
Quarter glass and vent windows
Quarter glass is the small fixed pane behind a rear door or beside a rear seat, and some cars have small vent panes in the front doors as well. They are often fixed in place and sealed rather than wound up and down, and their shape is specific to the model, sometimes to the trim. That makes the VIN important: Impex uses VIN-based verification so the part that is ordered matches the car. Give the side and position when you ask for a quote.
Back glass and the defroster
The rear window carries more than glass. Most have a defroster grid printed on the inside, wired to the car through connectors at the edges, and some carry an antenna. When back glass shatters, the pieces fall into the cabin, the cargo area or the bed of an SUV, and all of it has to be cleared before the new glass goes in.
Impex says back glass replacement takes one to two hours, and that you should avoid using the rear defroster for 24 hours afterwards. The defroster connections are reconnected as part of the job; ask the technician to show you the defroster working before they leave.
| Glass | Time (Impex’s guidance) | Drive away | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Door or side window | 30 to 60 minutes | Immediately | Broken glass cleared out of the door |
| Back glass | One to two hours | When the technician says | No rear defroster for 24 hours |
| Quarter or vent glass | Depends on the model | When the technician says | Exact part by VIN and position |
| Windshield | About one hour plus a short cure | Most within two hours | See windshield replacement Durham NC |

Glass that is cracked but not broken
Not every side or rear window shatters. A stone can crack a fixed quarter pane or a laminated side window, which some cars use for sound and security, without breaking it open. That glass holds together like a windshield, so the car can be driven carefully until the replacement, but it should still be replaced: a crack in a door window weakens it, and a door that is opened and closed every day keeps flexing it. Tell Impex whether the glass is broken open or cracked in place when you ask for a quote, because it changes how urgent the visit is and what has to be cleaned up.
For any other glass on the car, ask Impex; it will tell you whether the job is one for a mobile visit.
Tint and replacement glass
If the window that broke was tinted with film, the film went with it. Replacement glass comes clear or with the maker’s own factory shade, and any aftermarket film has to be applied again. North Carolina’s tint rules are in G.S. 20-127. Windows other than the windshield must let through at least 35 percent of light, with a meter reading over 32 percent presumed to comply, and reflectance must be 20 percent or less. Red, yellow and amber film is not allowed. Multipurpose vehicles such as minivans and pickups have an exception for windows behind the driver.
Since December 1, 2025, window tint is no longer part of the NC safety inspection: Senate Bill 391 removed it. The limits in G.S. 20-127 still apply on the road, and a driver with tinted windows must roll down the driver’s window when an officer approaches.
Safety glass is the law
G.S. 20-135 makes it unlawful to knowingly drive an NC-registered vehicle made on or after January 1, 1936 unless it has safety glass wherever glass is used in doors, windows, windshields, wings or partitions. A sheet of acrylic or plastic screwed over a door opening is a stopgap to keep the weather out until the glass is replaced, not a repair. AGSC also notes that side glass, like the windshield, is part of the vehicle’s passenger restraint system.
Paying for car window replacement
Broken glass is a comprehensive loss in North Carolina. The NC Department of Insurance lists breakage of glass among the losses comprehensive coverage pays for, less any deductible. A break-in may also bring a claim for what was stolen or damaged inside the car; ask your insurer how it handles both together.
- Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose who repairs the vehicle, and the insurer pays the same amount either way.
- A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident and adds no Safe Driver Incentive Plan points, though insurers may look at how often you claim.
- If the deductible is close to the cost of the glass, paying directly can make more sense than claiming.
- Impex works with all major insurance providers. Have the claim number ready if you have one.

How long does back glass replacement take?
